susan freda comes to taste

organic sculptures arrive this summer

We are so pleased to announce that Susan Freda will join the artists we covet and support at The Gallery at taste.  A long admirer of Susan’s work, I have had the opportunity to come to know her personally the past few months, and now understand her delicate magic comes from within.

More on her work…

Susan Freda is a sculptor and jeweler known for her organic, ephemeral, and intricate style. She employs form, light, and line as vehicles to create her airy, kinetic, and luminescent pieces. Her work is recognized for its unusual processes, signature weaving, and for its delicate and exquisite craftsmanship.
Susan is a RISD and Massachusetts College of Art and Design graduate.  She’s received multiple awards and has been presented in NY Fashion Week, Stuart Weitzman, Neiman Marcus, Ferragamo, Cirque du Soleil, and by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art Artists Gallery (among many others). Her work also appears in numerous private as well as corporate collections. (To see her full biography visit her webpage.)

Look for upcoming Summer gallery dates when we’ll feature Susan’s work and celebrate her artistry.

taste at work, part 1

busy in the studio, busy in the field

Team taste designers are at it again, fulfilling projects in all phases of the design/construction process as we enter into a busy late fall & winter season.  We’re so appreciative of New England’s seasonality and the added focus that comes this time of year in our coastal, summer community.  As we say goodbye to snowbird clients until next Spring, our heads are down in the studio and our boots are on in the field — preparing homes for the next summer season and for many, the next chapter of their lives with their families.

As always, we aren’t alone in our commitment to creating well-considered, well-crafted homes for our clients.  We are side by side with accomplished architects, builders and craftspeople all working together, with the same ethos.  When the days get dim and the temperatures dip, its these relationships that brighten our work and deliver a laugh – together.

Snapshots follow below from the studio and the field.  Check back next week for a peek at a few more projects underway and all benefiting from our hunkered-down focus this fall.

Only the best,

Kevin    Kevin’s leading the renovation of a classic Jamestown cottage, bringing together historic design details with energy efficient, advanced building practices.  Our designs started with perspective views of the interior and exterior prepared in Sketch-up, coupled with detailed drawings produced in CAD.  The trades are on-site now, roughing in plumbing and electrical in preparation for insulation in a few weeks.  Walls will be plastered in another month, providing a warm environment for interior finishes this winter and completion in the Spring.

Candy    There are deadlines and then there are yacht design deadlines.  Candy’s working alongside The Fontaine Group on a refit of a classic yacht in time to set sail in early December.  (A yacht is a bit different from a residence – when it sets sail, its gone.  There’s no returning to the house in a few weeks to add a piece or two that’s been delayed!).  Furnishings are in production, the pewter bar top is being crafted, joinery is in the finishing stages and the art has arrived.  We will make the deadline, beautifully.

Wendi    Wendi’s recently back from a well-deserved vacation in France with her husband, Peter.  (They are the most high energy, spirited empty-nesters you’ll ever meet!).  After trekking through the streets of Nice and Paris on bikes and mopeds, Wendi returned inspired and ready to infuse her projects with European quality and timelessness.  Coincidentally, we’ve started working with a client to renovate their new/old French-inspired home, providing the perfect opportunity for a palette of limestone, weathered wood, brick, iron and aged brass.

julia-staff-photo-smallJulia  If you’ve bumped into Julia recently, you’ll know she’s expecting baby #2 in February — although you wouldn’t know that from her energy level.  More than ever, she’s bringing her high-spirited, love of design to her client projects, including a new construction home Patrick Ahearn home in Weekapaug, Rhode Island.  We love our client’s self-described affinity for ‘spritely’ fabrics and colors.  Julia’s sense of style and ability to artfully compose a scheme is delivering just the right amount of spirited sprite to this coastal home.

Patti    As for me, I’m re-energized by recent design industry events that have given me a renewed focus on improving our design deliverables and ultimately, the client experience.  Let’s face it, a renovation or new build project is an intense experience for our clients.  They don’t do it everyday as we do.  More than ever, I’m dedicated to bringing the best talent, tools and project management to our clients so that they may find joy in the process of creating their home.  And, leave the worries to us.

Most importantly, I’m practicing this recommitment everyday while I lead projects ranging from the completion new construction coastal homes, to the renovation of a Normandy-inspired family home to the rework of a Kitchen for fellow designers I admire.  It doesn’t get much better than this.

final gallery open house, summer 2017

Join us!

Our July Open House was another warm and inspired gathering, with art and conversation enjoyed by all.  As I plan this month’s Open House – our last of the season – I realize it means summer is waning.  Be sure to join us as we wrap up Summer 2017 with a final burst of inspiration and artistic talent, including…

Debby Krim brings her ‘Colors of White’ photography series which has been seen in the Sandra Bullock / Ryan Reynolds movie “The Proposal,” Wendy Wahl’s three-dimensional studies of twisted paper adds new dimension to the walls, North Kingstown artist Vanessa Piche returns with her beautiful land and seascapes paintings of life along New England’s coasts, and Rhode Island artist Tiffany Adams joins us with her ceramic masterpieces.

Stop in on Thursday, August 17th between 5pm – 8pm to view our new selections. Enjoy great conversation with our artists, then grab dinner at one of Jamestown’s finest – FiSH across the street or Simpatico next door to taste.

I hope to see you next week.  In the meantime, meet our artists below and view a quick snapshot of their exceptional work.

an artist and her many shoes

Last summer brought new artists to taste. Among the fresh talent were paintings by the unique portrait artist Kelly Jo Shows represented by Candita Clayton Gallery. Kelly Jo takes an unconventional approach into her creations, focusing on shoes rather than faces to represent her subjects’ personality. The shoes she’s given display wear from all walks of life. Some are hard-worn, speckled with paint, classy, comfortable (like bedroom slippers), dressy, or a multitude of colorful converse sneakers. Each is as individual as their owner, and Kelly Jo Shows captures this through her detailed portraits.

I’m excited as this summer approaches to be working with Kelly Jo on a commissioned family portrait (think shoes instead of head shots) that will perfectly complete the interior of our clients’ summer home. Kelly Jo has just the right amount of modern sophistication and unique style to create this young family’s portrait. I’m looking forward to the process — reviewing the shoe choices, delivering these carefully selected pairs to Kelly Jo, and watching her transform them into two-dimensional perfection.

Enjoy a sampling of Kelly Jo Show’s portraits below. She has more wonderful portraits on Candita’s website, and a great look behind the scenes on her Instagram page at @fearnoart11. Be sure to check both out.

mid-winter blooms

floral excerpts from recent and past photoshoots

taste had the great pleasure of participating in Newport Life‘s designer showcase this past week. In eight short days we, along with two other local design firms, designed, hunted, gathered and installed all of the elements of a living room in a historic oceanfront property. (Then, on the ninth day, we photographed, dismantled, and packed it all up!). Look for photos of each designer’s room to be featured in Newport Life’s upcoming Home issue, due out in April.

Truth be told, we get pretty exhilarated around here preparing for a photoshoot. Even more so with only a week to get it picture perfect ready.

Fresh flowers and live plants is one of our tried and true tricks to finishing a taste-tailored room. Once again, we relied on mother nature’s gifts to complete our space this week. Big thanks to David Urban of Jamestown’s Secret Garden for lending his talent and enthusiasm to the project. We’re so fortunate to have him in our community.

Floral excerpts from recent and past photoshoots follow below, for a burst of color to warm up your mid-winter weekend. Kudos go out to the photographers who expertly captured these blooms, and more – Robyn Ivy, Kyle Caldwell, Danielle Lefebvre and Nat Rea.

thanks-giving 2016

On this Thanksgiving, as in years past, I pause to send sincere appreciation to our clients who have entrusted us with their homes, their hopes and their dreams this past year.  The clients who immerse themselves in the sometimes exhaustive thinking process with us to ensure that every detail of their homes meet their needs.  The clients who commission us to create custom furnishings that will passed on to their children.  The clients who stand back, give us freedom and a budget, then let us do what we do best.

The clients who called and emailed this week just to express their thanks.  You know who you are.

This weekend as I gather with my family at my parents’ home to reunite aunts and uncles, cousins and grandparents, sisters and friends, I’ll be thinking of you doing the same.  And I remain grateful for the opportunity to help create the homes that shelter you and yours this season, and always.

Only the best,

locally grown

how an abundance of local talent was tapped for this custom cottage

Everyday we are reminded of the deep pools of design and artisan talent that reside in our tiny state.  (Earlier this week, I ran into three local artisans ready to excitedly share news of their newest projects/work during a 10-minute run into the coffee shop for a mid morning tea.  No August vacation time for these busy artisans!).
Many of the artists and craftspeople we work with went to RISD and are (thankfully!) staying in Rhode Island to launch their careers.  Others are coming from New York, realizing that there are contemporaries here with whom to collaborate, while enjoying the lower cost of living and seaside benefits of the Ocean State.   Like any state, we have our issues.  But access to world-class designers and artisans isn’t one of them.
With commitment, I’ve actively developed my working relationships with local artisans and craftspeople for the past 12 years of my business.  And now my fellow taste-designers are doing the same.  It’s become a guiding principal of our practice.
So nothing gives us more pleasure than these words from a client: “I really want to work with as many local craftspeople as possible on this project”.  Amen.  And so we did.
Here’s a pictorial review of this Little Compton, Rhode Island project and a shout out to the local artisans and craftspeople who helped make this interior happen.

in good company: a shout-out to Shoreline Stone

Time for another shout-out to a trade partner who has consistently helped us make magic happen the past several months.  Shoreline Stone, based in Stonington, CT is one of our go-to resources for stone countertops and custom stone creations.  Their team is an endless source of energy, patience and the occasional problem solving on our projects.

As designers, we appreciate their willingness to hear ideas and roll up their sleeves to help engineer a design detail we, and the architects we work with, dream up.  (Case in point: Jeff Beckwith on the Shoreline team is helping us to embed a heating membrane in a marble shower seat open to the floor and supported by brackets, to eliminate that shock of cold that can happen when you perch on the shower seat.)

Sincere thanks to the entire team there, especially Tony, Lucilia, Jeff and Joe for your talent and collaboration.  A sampling of a few of the recent installations, including one that happened this week, follows.
